Meat processing industry is of enormous significance for India's development because of the vital linkages and synergies promoted by it. India is endowed with abundant livestock resources but the meat processing industry is still in the nascent stage. The necessary impetus for the development of the meat industry in India can be provided by developing trained manpower and technologies and equipment suitable for our needs, both of which are inadequate currently.
The above two issues of developing trained manpower, developing technologies and equipment suitable for our needs can be best addressed by developing a platform wherein the exchange and sharing of ideas between academics, researchers, entrepreneurs and personnel from the industry is possible. The absence of such an inclusive professional body encompassing all stakeholders of the meat industry under one umbrella is sorely felt.
Hence, the “Association of Meat Scientists and Technologists” with the headquarters at the Department of Meat Science and Technology, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai - 600 007 has been established.
